The Latin phrase, sic et non, “yes and no,” is used in many connections in literature and various forms of media. This phrase captures quite well the devastating charge brought against Paul by false teachers as he expresses it in verse 17. While emphatically denying that his ministry and message is characterized by vacillation and double talk, Paul at the same time sets forth a vigorous defense of his ministry. In verse 18, Paul connects the faithfulness of God to his ministry as a whole and his message specifically as he explains that God’s faithfulness preserves his word as incorruptible. A series of “fors” in subsequent verses expounds the concrete manner in which God’s faithfulness upholds Paul’s apostolic ministry. This message concludes with a series of applications expressing the spiritual effects of this divine preservation.
