Personal Sanctification

2 Corinthians 6:17-7:1

Holding forth two profound motives, Paul calls on believers to pursue personal sanctification. Bookends placed around the call to sanctification form the basis and furnish the motives of the sanctified life. On the front end of the call to sanctification in 7:1, Paul calls believers to lay hold of gospel promises which he set forth in 6:16-18 and on the back end, Paul calls believers to pursue holiness in the fear of the Lord. The structure of Paul’s thought in 7:1 makes it emphatically clear that the rugged nature of the sanctified life, killing sin and obeying God’s commands, demands that Christians become conscious of the motives of sanctification and pursue it relentlessly.
