The JB Philips translation contains a shocking yet accurate translation of verse 20 which records Peter’s response to Simon: to hell with you and your money. The sorcerer, Simon, was amazed at the power displayed by the apostles as they placed hands on the Samaritans and the Spirit fell upon them. As an old magician, Simon perceived that this was no trick and he wanted this power for himself. Peter responded to Simon’s request with bluntness, telling him that God’s judgment was upon such a mentality and then called him to repentance as he held out the prospect of divine mercy for the penitent.
