As Luke pauses his narrative to provide a snapshot of the early church, he sketches a portrait of its increasing growth. A general element of this growth was the peace of the church. This peace consisted of a momentary reprieve from persecution and the spiritual fruit of the preaching of the gospel. Three specific elements expand upon this climate of peace and church growth: being built up, going on in the fear of the Lord, and walking in the Holy Spirit. Under these conditions, Luke testifies that the church grew in number and the word flourished.
