The Heresy of Assurance

A prominent Roman Catholic critic of the Reformation argued that the protestant doctrine of assurance of salvation was the greatest of all Reformed heresies. Rome said that assurance of salvation could only properly be held by receipt of a special revelation; the Reformed however explained that those who looked to Christ alone for salvation were entitled to assurance. In Hebrews 10:19, the preacher emphatically proclaimed “confidence” was the possession of the believer on account of the perfect priestly work of Jesus Christ.
