The threads of verse 3, “tablets of stone” and “tablets of the human heart written on by the Spirit,” are taken up and expanded upon verses 4-6. Paul moves on in these verses to exalt his ministry as a true ministry by grounding it in the redemptive historical reality of the new covenant. By contrasting the “letter which kills” with the “Spirit which gives life” Paul picks up the theme of covenant contrast introduced in verse 3 and states explicitly that the signature feature of his ministry is the ministry of the Spirit which is the substance of the new covenant according to Old Testament prophecy. This message summarizes the prophetic promises regarding the new covenant and shows how those prophetic promises characterize Paul’s ministry.
