Nehemiah testifies to the fact that the people of God voluntarily and publicly covenanted before the Lord. And the reason they did that was for the purpose of renewing the city life of Jerusalem. They covenanted for the blessing of Zion. To correct the sins which led to the exile, the people of God needed to bind themselves in formal commitment to reject the way of their forefathers by covenanting to uphold the authority of God’s law in their midst. The purpose of Nehemiah 10 is to teach that public covenanting by the church promotes the spiritual health and wellbeing of the community.
